6 Days Umbwe Route

Majali Tours
The Umbwe route has a well-deserved reputation of being the most challenging route on Mount Kilimanjaro. Due to the fast ascent to high altitude, this route does not provide the necessary stages for acclimatization. Although the number of people on this trail is very low, the chances of success are also low. Umbwe is considered to be very difficult, taxing route – one that should only be attempted by strong hikers who are confident in their ability to acclimatize quickly to altitude. Approaching from the south, the Umbwe route is a short, steep and direct climb. After reaching Barranco Camp, the trail turns east and traverses underneath Kilimanjaro’s Southern Ice Field on a path known as the Southern Circuit before summiting from Barafu. Descent is made via the Mweka route.

What we'll do

Day 0: ARRIVAL

Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport / Other Pickup Destination, where you will meet a Majali guide, and be transferred to the hotel. In the evening there will be a briefing with our managers, who will also make sure you are prepared to trek Kilimanjaro on the Umbwe Route for 6 days by checking your gear and giving you a brief breakdown of the trip.

Day 1: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp

A guide and support crew will arrive at the hotel in the morning in order to meet you and hold another briefing. Then you will travel by vehicle from Moshi to Umbwe Gate ( 1800 m ). The group will stop for a light snack then start the 5-7 hour hike towards the Umbwe Cave Camp (2,930 m). Raincoats are necessary on this day in particular, as you will be walking through the rainforest foothills. By the time you reach the camp, our professional mountain crew will have prepared everything necessary, put tents up and cook dinner for you.

At night you may experience discomfort associated with acclimatization to the high altitude: because of a reduction in your waking breathing pattern, your body gets less oxygen than during the day. Taking altitude into account, you may therefore start feeling sick and have a headache. Pay attention to your own body and tell your guide if you start feeling any symptoms of altitude sickness.
